Fashion History 101: The 1960's

Sweeping change throughout the fashion world, the 1960's generated images and ideas that still appear today. Before fashion was only for the wealthy and mature, and during this decade it began to target towards younger people. Women began wearing mini skirts, mascara, leather boots, pale foundation, and black eye liner. Creating the "Mod Look" a trend created by 15 year old model named Lesley Hornbly, known as "Twiggy" for her big eyes, rail-thin frame, and short hair. The mini skirt became one of the most popular trends from the 60's. Voluptuous women like Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, and Elizabeth Taylor went toward a more sex kitten image. Big hair, pouty lips, dark eyeliner, and false lashes made these women sex symbols and beauty icons of the decade. While more natural actresses like Audrey Hepburn adopted the "Beatnik" look with black berets, black slacks, and dark glasses. Men got their trends from rockbands like The Beatles. In 1963, Pierre Cardin designed their single breasted, collarless jackets, and slim pants which became popular for men in London and in the U.S. The slim-fitting and bright garment have never really left the fashion world, we will see a new modernized version for Spring 2012.
